The Eid al-Fitr & Eid al-Adha food culture
Eid al-Fitr, the festival that closes Ramadan, is the busiest social day of the year in most Mappila households. Family and friends visit through the day; the host serves continuously; what is on the table has to be small, plentiful and easy to keep replenishing. Kozhi Ada and strong Sulaimani chaya do most of that work; everything else is supporting cast.
Two months later, Eid al-Adha shifts the emphasis to the meat-centred main meal, but the hospitality structure is the same, and the snacks on the side table are the same too.
Sealed packs suit Eid better than almost any other day: open a pack as each wave of visitors arrives, and there is nothing to fry between them. Order one to two weeks ahead; if you are sending to family from the Gulf, order to their Indian address.
